Protect Yourself on Public Transit Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

As the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to grow around the world, panic over travel safety has increased, especially on airplanes and public transportation. While community events and mass gatherings are being canceled, and more and more companies are choosing to have employees work remotely, the risk of exposure still poses a greater threat in crowded environments. Especially in places with poor air circulation, such as buses, subways, and trains, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Even though airlines and transit authorities have stepped up sanitation efforts to curb the spread of the virus, passengers can also take extra precautions by using disinfectant and antiseptic products while on the go, such as hand sanitizers and wet wipes.

Keep in mind that CDC recommends washing your hands frequently as one of the best defense methods to protect yourself, so you should always wash your hands for at least 20 seconds after traveling, as it is the most effective way to prevent the spread of the disease.

But when soap and water are not available, here are some of the products you can take with you to help you be germ-free while traveling.

1. Antibacterial gel – With at least 60% alcohol.

2. Disinfecting wet wipes – You can use them not only to clean your hands but also to clean the surfaces that you touch, such as railings, doors, seats, etc.

3. Disposable tissues – If you need to sneeze or cough on board a bus or any form of public transportation, you must cover your mouth and nose with a disposable tissue and throw it away immediately after use.

The CDC cites this as a crucial step in stopping the spread of respiratory drops produced by an infected person. Therefore, keep a pack of tissues in your purse or pocket when traveling. Also, remember to disinfect your hands after this.
